![]() Where you could have been mislead is the reason for privacy behind marriage vows in Faerie. Therefore, we can conclude that the vow, albeit made without a name at all, since it came from a faerie’s lips, was binding as any- including the vow of marriage at the end of TWK where Cardan uses “I, Cardan, son of Eldred, High King of Elfhame” but not his true name. And Jude was indeed able to control Cardan for the rest of TCP and most of TWK. He just says “I swear myself into your service…”. Since vows are essentially just more concrete, clearly-worded promises, you wouldn’t need a True Name to bind them.įor example, in TCP, Cardan pledges himself to Jude for one year and one day, but he doesn’t say “Cardan Greenbriar” or even “Cardan” anywhere in his vow. The Fae are bound by their words, their promises. So it’s likely that Cardan is one of his names, but he has two others that make up his “True Name” that we don’t know (Greenbriar, I’m guessing, is just a lineage name).ģ) In terms of vows, I don’t think a true name is required. The only exception to this rule is, of course, if the faerie in question is already pledged into your service (a la Cardan to Jude in TCP). For example, in QON, when the Ghost tries to climb out of the pit in Hollow Hall to kill Cardan, Taryn must say the Ghosts’s entire name in order to make him forget Madoc’s orders to kill the High King. The Ghost’s True Name is Larkin Gorm Garrett, but Madoc calls him Garrett in QON to prove to Jude that the Ghost is under his control (”The Ghost” is just a codename used by the Court of Shadows to further conceal identity).Ģ) You can’t control a faerie without saying their entire name. Here are some things about True Names and vows, as I understand them (but also, if anyone has any evidence to the contrary, feel free to share!):ġ) True names are basically just full names. For instance, Lord Roiben’s True Name is Rath Roiben Rye, but everyone calls him Roiben because, for obvious reasons, his full name isn’t common knowledge. It’s explained just enough so that we know True Names are, indeed, Important, but not enough to where we remember all the rules off the tops of our heads. I can see how you got there from what we’re given in the series. ![]() Thanks for the ask! You’ve certainly come to the right place to shriek/conspire about all things TFOTA □
